Tributes and remembrances continue to pour in for late folk icon David Crosby, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 81. One such mourner is the Late Show with David Letterman YouTube channel, which shared an archival clip of Crosby, Stills & Nash performing “Teach Your Children” from 2000.
One of the original supergroups, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash were leading voices in the burgeoning folk-rock movement of the 1960s. When established solo singer-songwriter Neil Young joined the group in 1969, the newly-minted Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young became a songwriting powerhouse. The expanded group’s 1970 debut Déjà Vu set the stage for the Laurel Canyon movement that would dominate rock music through the 1970s, but the band would not survive long enough to enjoy what it had helped create. Egos and the excesses of the rock n’ roll lifestyle—particularly the latter in Crosby’s case—kept the group sporadically together and apart through the next half-century.
This performance, taped on September 14th, 2000, came in the midst of a particularly peaceful time in the fragile CSNY alliance. Though Young did not perform with the band on Letterman, the reunited quartet appeared together days later at Farm Aid. This marked the culmination of the band’s incredibly lucrative CSNY2K tour, where many seats cost over $200 per Rolling Stone. If there were two things Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young helped pioneer, it was folk rock and the stadium reunion tour, with the band breaking up and reuniting nearly every decade from 1969–2015.
