Watch Gov’t Mule Cover Jeff Beck’s ‘Freeway Jam’ On ‘Rockpalast’ In 2017

Gov’t Mule wrapped up a European run on November 7, 2017 with a show at Forum Leverkusen in Leverkusen, Germany. Renowned German live music program Rockpalast broadcast the concert and also shared it on their YouTube channel. The performance, including a cover of Jeff Beck’s “Freeway Jam,” is the subject of this week’s Full Show Friday.

Jeff Beck’s sudden passing on Tuesday shook up the music world, including one of the guitar great’s biggest fans — Gov’t Mule guitarist Warren Haynes. Warren, who is recovering from a recent health scare, offered a tribute to his hero via social media.

“I’m devastated,” Warren wrote. “People ask me a lot “who’s your favorite living guitarist?” and the answer would always have to be Jeff Beck.”

According to SetlistFM Stats, Jeff Beck’s “Freeway Jam,” off his landmark 1975 solo album Blow By Blow, has been in the Mule repertoire since at least 1999. Although it didn’t see any action from 2002 to 2015, the song fell into heavy rotation in 2017 with the last of 10 performances that year coming in Leverkusen.

Gov’t Mule kicked off the Leverkusen concert with the traditional “Railroad Boy” followed by classics “Mule,” “Banks OF The Deep End” and “Game Face,” with the latter encompassing a “Mountain Jam” from the Allman Brothers Band catalog. The “Game Face” and “Mountain Jam” sequence clocked in at around 15 minutes.

Mule then turned to material off their current album at the time, 2017’s Revolution Come…Revolution Go, with “Pressure Under Fire,” “The Man I Want To Be,” “Thorns Of Life” and the title track. The Warren Haynes/Dickey Betts ABB co-write “Kind Of Bird” was also in the mix. “We’d like to invite a good friend our ours J.T. Thomas to come play some keyboards with us on this next song,” Warren said ahead of “Freeway Jam.”

Thomas would join keyboardist Danny Louis in key world, manning the organ as Matt Abts began the song’s shuffling snare intro and bassist Jorgen Carlsson thumped out the bassline. The band provided a perfect foundation for Warren to deliver some scorching guitar attacks before hitting the song’s main riff. All in all, Mule delivered a tight, 10-minute rendition of the Jeff Beck classic. More Revolution in “Traveling Tune” and “Stone Cold Rage” closed out the main set before Gov’t Mule returned to wrap things up with Blind Willie Johnson’s “Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground.”
