Blackberry Smoke Brings Out Stellar Singer-Songwriters Jamey Johnson & Brent Cobb At The Ryman

26

Blackberry Smoke began a two-night run at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on Thursday. The Atlanta-based rockers welcomed Nashville singer-songwriters Brent Cobb and Jamey Johnson in the main set and encore respectively.

Blackberry Smoke launched the concert with “Let Me Help You (Find The Door),” the opener on the band’s 2015 album Holding All The Roses. BBS then turned to material from 2021’s You Hear Georgia with “Live It Down.” The rockers would dip heavily from their latest studio album including the title track, “Hey Delilah” and more.

The band also cracked into their 2012 LP, The Whippoorwill — BBS celebrated the LP’s 10th anniversary late last year — performing “Pretty Little Lie,” the title track and a tease of Tom Petty’s “Don’t Come Around Here No More” in “Sleeping Dogs” among other The Whippoorwill tracks. Additional highlights included frontman Charlie Starr’s son Christian Gray joining in on guitar for “Waiting For The Thunder.”

Brent Cobb counted as the second guest of the evening. The outstanding singer-songwriter and cousin of renowned producer Dave Cobb helped BBS out on a cover of the J.J. Cale-penned, Lynyrd Skynyrd-popularized “Call Me The Breeze.” Blackberry Smoke went it alone to close out the main set with “Runaway From It All,” off 2018’s Find A Light, and You Hear Georgia’s “Old Scarecrow” to seal the set.

BBS kicked off the encore with another stellar singer-songwriter, Jamey Johnson, in tow on “Lonesome For A Livin.” Johnson then helped Starr on a raucous cover of The Band’s “Up On Cripple Creek.” Johnson would stick around to help Blackberry Smoke cap off the concert with “Ain’t Much Left Of Me,” which included an interpolation of Skynyrd’s “Mississippi Kid.”
