Bob Weir & Wolf Bros Get Extra Saxy With Dave McMurray In Detroit [Audio/Videos]

74

Sunday service was in session in Detriot as Bob Weir & Wolf Bros treated the Motor City to a sit-in from saxophonist Dave McMurray.

It wouldn’t be a Sunday Grateful Dead-adjacent show without “Samson and Delilah”, and Bobby and his Bros plus The Wolf Pack string/horn section knocked it out for the opener. Following a smooth “Crazy Fingers”, Detroit local McMurray added his sax to the horn section for “Loser”, the same song Weir guests on in McMurray’s album of Grateful Dead jazz interpretations, Grateful Deadication. Weir and the then-three-piece Wolf Bros previously brought out McMurray on his home turf in 2019.

After seeing McMurray off, Bobby and his usual suspects strolled through the bluesy “Althea”. The rhythm guitarist then dipped into his post-Dead songbook for a twofer of the relatively recent “She Knows What I’m Thinking” proceeded by the RatDog staple “Two Djinn”. The ensemble then checked the weather charts for a “Weather Report Suite” and “Let It Grow” to close the set.

Back for more, Bobby, his Bros, and the Wolf Pack resumed with “Jack Straw” and “Truckin’”, with the latter fully embracing the set two ethos as McMurray re-entered the chat. Throwing it back to the ’80s/’90s stadium era of the Grateful Dead, Bobby spiritually hiked up his trousers for Willie Dixon‘s “Wang Dang Doodle”, his first of the year per Setlist.fm. The meat of set two then came with the perennial pairing of “China Cat Sunflower” and “I Know You Rider”, ahead of the lumbering percussive behemoth “The Other One” wherein McMurray got out of the way of the speeding locomotive and left the stage. Slowing things down for the set two ballad, Bobby picked the crystalline beauty of “Stella Blue” before leaving the audience in a rhythmic loop by walking off to “Not Fade Away”.

Taking The Fillmore stage one last time, Bob Weir & Wolf Bros lulled the audience off into the work week with “Brokedown Palace”.
