Bob Weir & Wolf Bros Welcome Saxophonist Mitch Marcus For Rollicking ‘Miracle’ & More At The Capitol Theatre

Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros launched a four-night run at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York on Tuesday. Saxophonist Mitch Marcus would join The Wolf Pack string and horn section for a pair of songs in the second set.

Guitarist Bob Weir, bassist Don Was, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, drummer Jay Lane and pedal steel guitarist Barry Sless along with The Wolf Pack — violinist Mads Tolling, cellist Alex Kelly, trombonist Adam Theis, trumpeter Brian Switzer and saxophonist Sheldon Brown — kicked off the concert with a 15-minute “Cassidy.” “My Brother Esau,” which the Dead only played between 1983 and ‘87, followed.

Bob Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece” came next ahead of another cover, “Catfish John,” written by Bob McDill and Allen Reynolds. Bobby and company returned to Grateful Dead originals with “Tennessee Jed,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Lost Sailor” and “Saint Of Circumstance” to conclude the first frame.

The second set got underway with Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried.” A sprawling rendition of the classic Dead pairing of “China Cat Sunflower” and “I Know You Rider” came next ahead of a substantial “He’s Gone.”

Renowned saxophonist Mitch Marcus then joined The Wolf Pack horns, who added some tasty accents to “Going Down The Road Feeling Bad.” Marcus would step into the spotlight on “I Need A Miracle,” offering some jazzy sax stylings to the Bobby rocker. Marcus then departed ahead of more Dylan in “All Along The Watchtower,” which flowed into “Stella Blue.”

Bobby’s classic closer “Sugar Magnolia” capped off the encore-less evening. Weir and company return to The Cap tonight before concluding the run with two-nights on Friday and Saturday
