Club d’Elf is currently touring in support of the enigmatic Boston-based music collective’s 25th anniversary. In celebration of their silver anniversary, the band’s debut album As Above was digitally reissued, landing on all major streaming platforms for the first time.
Originally released on CD in 2000, As Above was recorded live in 1999 and 2000 and culled from six performances held at the band’s regular stomping grounds, Cambridge’s The Lizard Lounge. Club d’Elf was founded in 1998 at The Lizard Lounge as an intentional jam session, featuring founder/bassist/composer Mike Rivard’s cohorts from the local music scene. Morphine’s Mark Sandman was integral to the group and Rivard’s development of the project.
Consisting of 20 live tracks, As Above features Rivard, along with DJ Logic on turntables, Kenwood Dennard on drums, Duke Levine on guitar, Alain Mallet on keyboards, Mat Maneri on electric violin, Joe Maneri on tenor saxophone/clarinet, Erik Kerr on drums, Brahim Fribgane oud/doumbek/qaraqab, Dr. Didg on didgeridoo, Reeves Gabrels on guitar and others. Speaking of Joe Maneri and Gabrels’ contributions, Rivard stated:
“It’s always been our style to remix the music with players who come from distinctly different backgrounds, and this was one of the coolest examples of that. Reeves was playing with David Bowie at the time and Joe was a legend in the free jazz and microtonal scenes. They couldn’t have been further apart musically speaking, but their openness to each other and deep listening helped to create something that defies categorization.”
The As Above digital reissue follows the April 2022 release of Club d’Elf third studio album, You Never Know, which was their first since 2011. Stream As Above on your preferred streaming platform and/or via Spotify below:
