Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds on Friday kicked off the sixth edition of their Riviera Maya destination with their first of three performances on the beach at Moon Palace Resort in Cancún, Quintana Roo, Mexico. Following a daytime show by Mt. Joy at the Nizuc Pool and an opening set by The War and Treaty, Matthews and Reynolds hit the stage for a 25-song set featuring a surprise appearance by guitarist Celisse on a pair of classic covers.
Among the many highlights from the opening-night performance were new tunes “Monsters” (first time played) and “Madman’s Eyes” (a Dave & Tim debut), both of which are due to appear on Dave Matthews Band‘s forthcoming LP, Walk Around The Moon. Other notable moments included an extended outro on “The Best of What’s Around”, a “Can’t Help Falling In Love” (Elvis Presley) interpolation during “The Stone”, and a pair of flowing Reynolds solo numbers (“Chatterbox” and “Manfood”).

At the end of the set, Celisse, who had performed a “Welcome Party” set of her own by the pool on Thursday, joined Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds on the stage to add some rock and roll edge to the acoustic proceedings with scorching electric guitar solos on Neil Young‘s “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)” and Bob Dylan-penned setlist staple “All Along The Watchtower”.
