David Byrne Sits In With Maggie Rogers At Radio City Music Hall [Watch]

Talking Heads frontman David Byrne made a surprise appearance on Wednesday at Maggie Rogers‘ concert at Radio City Music Hall. The two performed a duet of Byrne’s 2008 track with Brian Eno, “Strange Overtones”.

The night was a full-circle moment for Rogers who, as Consequence points out, last took the Radio City stage in 2016 for her graduation from New York University.

“I keep looking out into the crowd, and just know that I can see each and every one of you,” Rogers told the audience at one point between songs. “I keep thinking that I recognize the faces of people I went to college with!”

While a performance of Rogers’ 2019 breakthrough track “Alaska” in the latter half of the set may have appeared to be the highlight, it was quickly trumped as the band dropped into the quirky beat of “Strange Overtones”. “Ladies and gentlemen for one night only, please welcome David Byrne!” Rogers exclaimed as Byrne naturally strolled onstage.

The pair’s vocal duet displayed a natural chemistry outdone only by their choreographed dance moves. The synchronized steps recalled Talking Heads’ iconic “Once in a Lifetime” video—or Phish‘s “Turtle in the Clouds” dance if that’s more your speed. Rogers previously worked with Byrne for her “That’s Where I Am” music video, during which she spots the singer biking around the streets of Manhattan—a rite of passage for any true New Yorker.
