Eric Krasno and Stanton Moore released a cover of Brittany Howard’s “Stay High” under their Krasno / Moore Project moniker. The track is set for the pair’s newly announced album, Krasno Moore Project: Book of Queens, due out on March 17 via Concord Jazz.
Book of Queens — which was recorded at the famed Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, New York, and mixed by Jim Scott (Tedeschi Trucks Band, Wilco) — sees guitarist Eric Krasno (Soulive) and drummer Stanton Moore (Galactic) paying tribute to women in music. Krasno spoke about how the concept came about:
“When Stanton and I got together and decided to make a record we knew we wanted to focus on a concept that we both believed in. With the help of our wives (Lauren and Lauren), we started discussing a few ideas and agreed that a tribute to our favorite female singers and songwriters would be perfect. There are so many amazing songs to choose from spanning every genre and every era. Stanton and I zoned in on songs that had the right melodies and moods for an organ trio format. As soon as we started adapting the songs, adding grooves, and making demos with Eric Finland (organ/keys) we knew we had something special.”
“With this record, we wanted to create an album that we would be proud to play for our wives…something that we could listen to while making dinner or hanging on the beach,” Moore added. “Our goal was to assemble a collection of songs that created an instant vibe from beginning to end, and could be enjoyed with family and friends time and time again.”
The record contains nine covers from Amy Winehouse, Nina Simone, Billie Eilish, Sharon Jones, H.E.R, Kacey Musgraves, Brittany Howard, Peggy Lee and Aretha Franklin. After announcing the Krasno / Moore Project last November along with March 2023 tour dates, the band shared their first cover, Billie Eilish’s “Lost Cause,” in early February.
Krasno / Moore Project now follow with an instrumental cover of Brittany Howard’s “Stay High,” featuring Cory Henry (Book Of Queens also sees guest spots from Branford Marsalis and Robert Randolph). Stanton spoke about the Howard cover.
“I love Brittany’s work. This song has such a rolling triplet feel to it. I’ve played a lot of funk in my career, but I love playing shuffles too, especially different types of shuffles. With this tune, we got to have fun slightly varying the original feel while still keeping this song in the triplet and shuffle world. Cory Henry appears on this song as our first special guest on the record and plays so melodically and beautifully.”
