Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros brought out guitarist Grahame Lesh for multiple appearances at the group’s Wednesday night concert in Asheville, North Carolina. Grahame contributed to a four-song run in the second set at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium and also added to the evening’s encore.
Wednesday’s show began with the Wolf Bros debut of Grateful Dead classic “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” featuring the lineup of guitarist Bob Weir, bassist Don Was, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, drummer Jay Lane and pedal steel guitarist Barry Sless. The Wolfpack horns then emerged for the tour’s first rendition of “Odessa” from Weir’s time in RatDog. Bobby went on to lead the core five-piece lineup on the Hunter/Garcia gem “Mission In The Rain” before The Wolfpack strings added to “Brown-Eyed Women.”
The first set rolled on with Weir helming a cover of Bob Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece” showcasing Sless’ skills on pedal steel. From there the full ensemble was featured for extended takes on “West L.A. Fadeaway” and “Cassidy” to close the frame.
The original Wolf Bros trio featuring Weir, Lane and Was kicked off last night’s second set with Bobby on acoustic for Little Feat’s “Easy To Slip.” A slow and swampy “Fever” with the horns in tow came next before Grahame Lesh emerged. Grahame Lesh had a night off from Midnight North‘s winter tour, which continues tonight at The Grey Eagle in Asheville. “I’ve known him since before he knew me,” Weir told the crowd to introduce Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh’s son.
Grahame Lesh augmented Bob Weir and Wolf Bros along with The Wolfpack horns and strings on “Scarlet Begonias.” He stuck around for a raucous “Viola Lee Blues,” pretty version of “The Wheel” and an intense “All Along The Watchtower.” Weir and Wolf Bros then went sans Grahame for an emotion-laden “Standing On The Moon” and rousing “Around And Around” to bring the set to its conclusion. Grahame Lesh returned on electric guitar and backing vocals to help Bobby Weir and Wolf Bros featuring The Wolfpack punctuate the night with a “Ripple” encore.
