Pink Talking Fish brought their winter tour to Red Bank, New Jersey on Friday night, where they welcomed Phish lyricist Tom Marshall for a cameo. Marshall emerged during “Run Like An Antelope” at The Vogel to sing a few of the lyrics on a song he co-wrote with The Dude Of Life.
The guest spot took place as part of PTF’s second set in Red Bank. Marshall came out towards the end of “Run Like An Antelope” and provided the “Rye, rye Rocco” and “Marco Esquandolas” lyrics. “Been you to have any spliff, mon?” the lyricist added in a call back to The White Tape version. Pink Talking Fish guitarist Cal Kehoe referenced the guest by singing, “You got to run like Tom Marshall out of control” after Marshall left the stage.
Tom Marshall previously provided similar guest spots at historic Phish shows. The Princeton, New Jersey native and writing partner/childhood friend of Trey Anastasio first appeared with the quartet on “Antelope” at the Worcester Centrum on New Year’s Eve 1993. He reprised the cameo on New Year’s Eve 1994 at Boston Garden. Three additional appearances singing “Run Like An Antelope” followed in 2000 as well as one at the Coventry festival in 2004 followed. Most recently he sang the song with The Dude Of Life at Phish’s July 6, 2012 concert at SPAC in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Pink Talking Fish’s lineup of Kehoe, bassist Eric Gould, keyboardist Richard James and drummer Zack Burwick devoted their first set in Red Bank to a complete rendering of Pink Floyd’s iconic 1973 album The Dark Side Of The Moon. The trend celebrating the 50th anniversary of the LP will continue throughout the tour.
The quartet went with their normal fusion of songs from the Phish, Talking Heads and Pink Floyd repertoires for the second set at The Vogel. PTF fit “Girlfriend Is Better” between “The Curtain” and the “With” part of the song to get the frame underway. A take on “Young Lust” followed before the four-piece worked Talking Heads’ “Nothing But Flowers” into the aforementioned “Run Like An Antelope.” It was then back to the Floyd catalog for an “Astronomy Domine” that bled into “Cities.”
Pink Talking Fish capped their second set on the Jersey Shore with a “My Friend My Friend” they jammed into “Also Sprach Zarathustra,” aka “2001.” The band returned for the Talking Heads classic “Once In A Lifetime,” which along with a reprise of “Eclipse” brought the evening to a close as the encore.
