The Headhunters, a jazz-fusion group originally formed by the great Herbie Hancock to record his seminal album Head Hunters, began their 50th anniversary celebration at Brooklyn Bowl on Thursday.

Original Headhunter Bill Summers (percussion) and his co-bandleader drummer Mike Clark along with New Orleans saxophonist Donald Harrison, bassist Chris Severin, and pianist Kyle Roussel marked the 50th anniversary of Herbie’s Head Hunters with a set furnished mostly with songs from the album, plus other tunes from their extensive catalog, including the album Speakers In the House, which they released at the end of 2022.

Whether playing songs from last year or 50 years ago, the jazz-fusion heavyweights display a timeless musical sensibility while continuing to push boundaries with experimental compositions and thrilling live improvisation.
