Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour & Roger Waters Reignite Feud

Former Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters gave an interview with the Berlin-based newspaper Berliner Zeitung that elicited an strong response from Polly Samson, the wife of Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour. Samson’s damning tweet was reshared by Gilmour while adding support for the accusations she made against Waters.

In April 2022, Pink Floyd issued a new single entitled “Hey Hey Rise Up” with proceeds benefiting the citizens of Ukraine. The track was the first new original music from the band in 28 years. “Hey Hey Rise Up” was recorded by Gilmour and Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, longtime touring bassist Guy Pratt and keyboardist Nitin Sawhney. The song also included vocals from Ukrainian singer Andriy Khlyvnyuk of Boombox.

Waters – who has been an outspoken critic of the war between Russia and Ukraine, the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, and other political causes in recent years – was asked about “Hey Hey Rise Up” during the interview with Berliner Zeitung. The paper published the below exchange regarding the track:

BZ: How do you like the fact that Pink Floyd have recorded a new piece for the first time in 30 years – with the Ukrainian musician Andrij Chlywnjuk?
RW: I have seen the video and I am not surprised, but I find it really, really sad. It’s so alien to me, this action is so lacking in humanity. It encourages the continuation of the war. Pink Floyd is a name I used to be associated with. That was a huge time in my life, a very big deal. To associate that name now with something like this… proxy war makes me sad. I mean, they haven’t made the point of demanding, “Stop the war, stop the slaughter, bring our leaders together to talk!” It’s just this contentless waving of the blue and yellow flag. I wrote in one of my letters to the Ukrainian teenager Alina: I will not raise a flag in this conflict, not a Ukrainian flag, not a Russian flag, not a US flag.

Waters’ interview, which covered several other politically charged topics, drew an accusatory response from Samson. Samson wrote the lyrics to several songs on Pink Floyd’s 1994 album The Division Bell, which was recorded after Waters left the band.

Shortly after Samson sent her tweet, Gilmour threw his support behind Samson by quoting her tweet while adding, “Every word demonstrably true.”

Waters acrimonious split from Pink Floyd occurred in 1985 and tensions between him and Gilmour have remained ever since. Waters responded to Samson’s tweet with a message refuting the “incendiary” accusations. Read Waters’ statement in response to Samson’s tweet below:

Waters will bring his This Is Not A Drill Tour to Europe in mid-March. The extensive tour ends in mid-June, with shows in Germany scheduled in May.
