Roger Daltrey Cuts Show Short In Order To Avoid ‘Serious Damage’ To Singing Voice

34

Plagued by sound issues and illness, The Who frontman Roger Daltrey ended his solo concert early on Saturday night. The apologetic 78-year-old singer complained of not feeling well during the Who Was I? Tour stop at Ruth Eckerd Hall and Clearwater, Florida.

Daltrey expressed frustration with the quality of the sound mix in his in-ear monitors several times during Saturday’s concert. He stopped and restarted a performance of “Giving It All Away” by Leo Sayer and then stopped again in the middle of “Getting In Tune,” restarting The Who classic as well.

Guitarist Simon Townshend was called upon to sing lead on “The Way It Is” and also took over lead vocals on the penultimate song of the set, “Going Mobile.” The subsequent “Naked Eye” was abandoned as Daltrey gave into the circumstances and decided to cancel the rest of the performance.

Having complained about indigestion throughout the nearly hour-long performance, Daltrey finally said:

“I’m going to do myself some serious damage here and I’m not going to do it because I’ll never sing again! I’m sorry! You’ll have to ask for refunds, I’ll try and make it up to you. I’m really, really sorry. I am not a robot! I am definitely not a robot! I’m not doing this to myself anymore. Thank you so much for coming.”

Roger Daltrey headlines the Rock Legends Cruise 2023 that leaves from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida today (Monday, February 13). View video posted by audience members of Daltrey’s concert Saturday in Florida below:
