See Umphrey’s McGee Keyboardist Joel Cummins Give A Tour Of His Rig

2023 marks Umphrey’s McGee‘s 25th Anniversary and over the years keyboardist Joel Cummins has made many changes to his rig. Cummins shows off the latest iteration of his set up in a rig tour video captured by JamBase contributor Ryan Storm for his Storm Sound website.

Joel’s first full tour of his Umphrey’s McGee keyboard rig was filmed before the band’s January 29 show in Cleveland. Cummins started by showing off the Roland D stage piano he’s had on stage for the past 10 years. He likes the Roland D because of its clarity and ability to stand out in a band with two loud guitarists. Joel then displayed his 18-year-old Mini Moog Voyager which he plays on a number of songs including “Hurt Bird Bath.”

One of Joel’s favorite keyboards is his Fender Rhodes 73. Cummins spoke about its importance to Umphrey’s music. While he loves the old instrument, he’ll soon be obtaining a Vintage Vibe piano to give him even more flexibility in terms of tones. Cummins recently spent time with the crew figuring out how much of each show he spends at each keyboard. They decided to swap locations of the B3 and Rhodes so he can face the rest of the band more often.

Cummins eventually moved on to his 1968 Hammond B3 organ. He gave a taste of his work on “Miss Tinkle’s Overture” to show how he’s able to cut through the guitars. Joel also displayed the tone he uses on “Anchor Drops” and utilizing the percussive elements of the organ. The musician finished by discussing his Mellotron and Nord Stage keyboards.
