Sound Cipher — featuring renowned saxophonist Skerik, percussionist Tim “Herb” Alexander of Primus and synth/bass player Timm Mason — will release their debut album, All That Syncs Must Diverge, on April 21 via Royal Potato Family. The trio previewed the record with the single “Grid Incursion.”
Sound Cipher grew out of a rehearsal for Primus’ Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory project when Skerik and Alexander discovered a chemistry during a jam session. The musicians scheduled time at Studio Litho in Seattle for early 2017 with producer Randall Dunn. Randall brought on Timm Mason, originally to assist with modular synth processing. Timm ended up setting up in the live room instead of the control room. While surprised at this move, Skerik and Alexander were impressed by Mason’s sonic manipulations and the Sound Cipher trio was born.
While the band intended to release the 2017 sessions as their debut, Sound Cipher built upon their chemistry through live performances which continued to inform their studio work. Sessions at Seattle’s Avast Studios in 2018 followed. The highlights from both sessions combined to create All That Syncs Must Diverge.
