The Hold Steady rounded out a run of 20th-anniversary tour dates on Saturday at Brooklyn Bowl Philadelphia.
The Minneapolis-born, Brooklyn-based alt-rock band made quite the first impression for its sold-out debut at Brooklyn Bowl Philadelphia, taking the stage to the theme from Rocky, “Gonna Fly Now”. The Hold Steady combed through its catalog, offering a career-spanning retrospective that included favorites “Stuck Between Stations”, “Sequestered in Memphis”, “Your Little Hoodrat Friend”, and many more over the course of a 25-song show.
“Not sure if it’s the Eagles recent successes, but something was in the air in Philadelphia on Saturday,” the band wrote on Facebook after the fact. “It was our first trip to this awesome Brooklyn Bowl Philadelphia location. and it was electric from the first note. We came on stage to ‘Gonna Fly Now (Rocky’s Theme)’ and it set the tone for an excitable evening. What followed was one for the ages, and with an opener of The Feelers into Stuck Between Stations, where the room seemed to explode. We pulled out a few from the new record including Carlos is Crying and did Citrus and Modesto in the encore. It was an amazing end to a fantastic weekend.”
With the U.S. leg in the rearview, The Hold Steady will take its 20th-anniversary celebration abroad for shows in London before returning stateside in the summer for a three-night run through Chicago, including two nights at The Salt Shed. Tickets and a full list of tour dates are available on the band’s website. Check out a gallery of images from The Hold Steady in Philadelphia on Saturday courtesy of photographer Andrew Blackstein.
