Greensky Bluegrass wrapped up their 2023 Winter Tour at the Uptown Theatre in Kansas City on Saturday. The quintet unveiled a cover of Harry Styles’ “As It Was” as the penultimate song of the second set.
GSBG — mandolinist Paul Hoffman, guitarist Dave Bruzza, banjo player Michael Bont, bassist Mike Devol and dobro player Anders Beck — kicked off the concert with “Grow Together” off their latest album Stress Dreams. The first set also saw a performance of oldie “Broken Highways,” along with standards like “Burn Them,” “Old Barns” and set closer “Leap Year.”
The second set got going with another vintage number, “The Radio Blues.” The quintet also went heavy on the Stress Dreams tracks during the second frame offering “Screams,” “Absence Of Reason” and “Worry For You.” The band’s take on instrumental from Beck’s time in The Wayword Sons followed “Worry For You” and flowed into the debut of Harry Styles’s “As It Was.”
The song’s opening synth line — handled by Bont on the banjo — and upbeat nature translated well to bluegrass. Hoffman led the band through the Harry’s House cut ahead of set closer “Living Over.” Greensky Bluegrass returned to encore with “Fixin’ To Ruin.”
