Watch Original Member Gregg Rolie Join Journey For Rarities & More In Austin

46

Journey co-founder and keyboardist Gregg Rolie joined the band for an extended collaboration last night in Austin. Rolie, who was a member of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame band from 1973 through 1980, came out towards the end of the concert at the Moody Center to sing and play on a handful of deep cuts as well as a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Black Magic Woman.”

The Austin stop came as Journey celebrates their 50th anniversary by teaming with Toto for a lengthy co-headlining tour of North America. “We have an extra special set tonight, so when we go offstage at the end of the show, don’t leave,” guitarist Neal Schon advised the audience early in Journey’s set as per Ultimate Classic Rock.

Neal Schon is the sole founding member in the current Journey lineup. The latest iteration of the band also features keyboardists Jonathan Cain and Jason Derlatka, lead vocalist Arnel Pineda, bassist Todd Jensen and drummer Deen Castronovo. Journey and Toto began the trek on February 4 sans issue despite Schon and Cain being embroiled in a lawsuit over the band’s finances.

Gregg Rolie emerged after Journey’s 17th song in Austin to lead the group through “Just The Same Way,” a song featured on 1979’s Evolution. Rolie then fronted Journey on their first “Of A Lifetime” performance since November 5, 2005. The legendary rockers followed the tune off their self-titled 1975 LP by looking to 1978’s Infinity for “Feeling That Way” and “Anytime.” Both Infinity cuts saw Gregg Rolie and Deen Castronovo share lead vocal duties.

The band had another treat in store for concertgoers as Toto guitarist Steve Lukather came out to accompany Journey and Gregg Rolie on “Black Magic Woman” complete with its “Gypsy Queen” ending. Rolie sang the version of the song released by Santana in 1970 that peaked at the four-slot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Journey ended the night without guests for a performance of the beloved hit “Any Way You Want It.”
