The City of Albany celebrates moe. Day today in time for the famed jam act’s first of two performances at the Palace Theatre tonight. A new honor was just announced on this fifth annual moe. Day as the city has temporarily renamed N. Pearl Street to moe.street.
While moe. was formed in Buffalo, the band spent its early days living together at a house on Albany’s Central Avenue in the mid-1990s. After moving up from Bogie’s in 1994 to Valentine’s in 1995, moe. first played the Palace — which is located on the portion of N. Pearl Street rechristened immediately as moe.street — on September 26, 1996 as part of the short “Rock The Vote Tour” with fellow Upstate New York-based jam acts Moonboot Lover, Ominous Seapods and Yolk.
The Palace Theatre would go on to become a home venue of sorts for moe. starting with their headlining debut at the 2,844-capacity space on November 18, 2000. Friday and Saturday’s shows will be moe.’s 16th and 17th appearances at the Palace. Additionally, the group filmed a short video concert at the venue’s lobby in the fall of 2020 to raise funds for the Palace while it was closed due to the pandemic.
Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan declared February 24th moe.day in 2018 to commemorate the group’s return to the Palace after bassist Rob Derhak was successfully treated for oropharyngeal cancer. Sheehan noted moe.day is “alive and well” as guitarist Chuck Garvey recently returned to full-time action after suffering a stroke in 2021.
“We are overwhelmed with the love the City Of Albany has given our band over the years,” noted guitarist Al Schnier. “From declaring Feb 24th as ‘moe.day’ to this, the dedication of ‘moe.street in front of The Palace Theatre, we are humbled and deeply honored.” moe. recently expanded their lineup with the addition of keyboardist Nate Wilson.
