Double Billy Action: See Billy Joel Welcome Billy Gibbons For ZZ Top Classics At Madison Square Garden

Billy Joel resumed his monthly residency at New York City’s Madison Square Garden last night. The Piano Man brought out ZZ Top frontman Billy Gibbons for performances of two of the Texas-based trio’s best known songs towards the end of Sunday’s main set.

The collaboration took place after the 13th song of Joel’s 88th monthly show at the famed venue. Billy Joel’s band began playing “La Grange” from ZZ Top’s 1973 album, Tres Hombres, when Gibbons strolled on stage to huge applause. “From a Billy to a Billy,” Gibbons exclaimed and called for his guitar. Gibbons then restarted “La Grange” and handled lead vocals on the number. Each Billy took a solo with Gibbons scorching the guitar and Joel lighting up the piano. Saxophonist Mark Rivera also got in on the action with a solo of his own.

Billy Gibbons stuck around for a version of “Tush” sung by Billy Joel guitarist Mike Delguidice. ZZ Top originally released “Tush” on their fourth album, 1975’s Fandango!. Gibbons let the fretboard fireworks fly once again. “That was a fantasy come true,” Joel told the crowd after Gibbons left the stage.
