Goose returned to The Met in Philadelphia on Saturday night for the second of two sold-out shows. Similar to Friday night, the band stretched a song out to nearly half an hour and played two action-packed and energetic sets for the receptive crowd.

Beginning the night with a short dissonant intro to “Dr. Darkness,” the band quickly whipped the crowd into a frenzy during the ensuing “Yeti,” largely thanks to theatrics and fretboard fireworks by multi-instrumentalist Peter Anspach. The high-speed firestorm of the Great Blue classic was just a warm-up as the quintet fired up “Borne” next.

Featuring a more up-tempo arrangement for the second time (this version of “Borne” was debuted at the Capitol Theatre on March 10, 2023), Goose chose the third song of the show as the improvisational centerpiece of the night. A trend we have seen in each show of the tour so far, the band is intentionally letting jams expand on their own and have been approaching them with a patience only seen rarely in previous tours.

As “Borne” began to unfold into a gentle major-key space led by guitarist Rick Mitarotonda’s beautiful melodies, the rhythm section of drummer Ben Atkind, percussionist Jeff Arevalo and bassist Trevor Weekz drove the groove in no hurry.

While Anspach and Weekz hinted at a transition to a minor key early on in the jam, Mitarotonda kept it firmly major and the band built into a series of great peaks. Fading away to near silence around the 15-minute mark, Atkind’s sparse cymbal splashes painted a gorgeous backdrop as piano, guitar and bass twirled around each other in a musical ballet. The crowd engaged with rapt and unwavering attention as the band searched for their next direction.

Staying within the beautiful and contemplative space, Anspach introduced a gentle and beautiful synth tone and then filled the improv with warm Vintage Vibe electric piano tones as Atkind’s tom work began to push the music and intensity

Picking up steam again and eventually segueing perfectly into The Band’s “W.S. Walcott Medicine Show,” the capacity crowd went wild for the cover’s first play since June 14, 2022 — a 59-show gap. “Butter Rum” was tapped next and put the band’s tight and focused play back on display before the dual parts of “Seekers on the Ridge” brought the first frame to a close.

Goose began the second set with a wildly explosive take on “Same Old Shenanigans” — a song that doesn’t vary much from version to version but is guaranteed to lift your spirits and get you dancing! “Lead Up” was tapped next, a rocking tune debuted at the Capitol Theatre earlier in the month. Mitarotonda took center stage with a wicked rock-and-roll solo that just oozed swagger before the quintet jumped into “So Ready.” Both guitarists got a chance to shine on the ensuing song, bringing the energy in the Met even higher.

Anspach took a second to shout out fans dancing hard in the balcony of the venue before the band lit into “Rosewood Heart.” Propulsive drums and soaring guitar dominated this version as the band locked in on another series of impressive peaks. A brief minute of post-peak space bled perfectly into the beginning of “Dripfield.”

Drums were the focus once again as Atkind and Arevalo attacked the title track of Goose’s most recent album with an incredible amount of energy. Mitarotonda led the band through multiple modulations throughout the jam, which seemed to hint heavily at “Mas Que Nada” before closing out the set.

A romp through classic show closer “Turn On Your Love Light” ended the show and Philly run on a high note.

Goose are three shows into their spring tour and has already shown an incredible dedication to expansive improv and exploring new territory. The tour continues tonight with a sold-out show at The Agora in Cleveland. Webcasts are available for free to nugs.net subscribers.
