Stephen Stills released a live cut of “Love The One You’re With.” The track is set for the legendary singer-songwriter’s forthcoming Live At Berkeley 1971 album, arriving on April 28 via Iconic Artists Group/Omnivore Recordings.
Handpicked by Stills, the 14-track, previously unreleased Live At Berkeley 1971 was captured at the Berkeley Community Theater in Berkeley, California, on August 20 and 21, 1971. The concerts saw Stephen delivering an acoustic set followed by an electric set. The album boasts a sit-in by David Crosby and also sees Stills joined by friends and frequent collaborators drummer Dallas Taylor, bassist Calvin “Fuzzy” Samuels, keyboardist Paul Harris, guitarist Steve Fromholz and percussionist Joe Lala along with The Memphis Horns.
Dubbed The Memphis Horns Tour, the Berkeley concerts came as part of Stills’ first solo tour around his second album, Stephen Stills 2. Live At Berkeley 1971 contains tunes from that record, Stills’ 1970 eponymous solo debut album as well as Crosby, Stills & Nash and Buffalo Springfield favorites. The Memphis Horns Tour rolled through the activist hotbed of Berkeley in August 1971.
“The intimacy of the Berkeley Community Theater seemed to serve as a focal point between the audience and the energy surrounding the social climate of the day,” Stills recalled. “It was my first tour as a solo artist and these shows were raucous and unrestrained, captured here in these recordings.”
Among those recordings and opening the album is Stills’ biggest hit, “Love The One You’re With.” Listen below:
