Joe Russo’s Almost Dead closed out a three-night stand at The Eastern in Atlanta last night that took place one month later than originally scheduled after a band member tested positive for COVID. Sunday’s show featured a pair of JRAD debuts, one of which was the geographically appropriate The Allman Brothers Band instrumental “Hot ‘Lanta.”
Namesake drummer Joe Russo, bassist Dave Dreiwitz, keyboardist Marco Benevento and guitarists Tom Hamilton and Scott Metzger worked an opening jam into an adventurous “Uncle John’s Band” that saw Russo back Benevento on a gospel-tinged solo to get last night’s show underway. The quintet then delivered a high-energy “Shakedown Street” before turning to The Band’s songbook for an “Ophelia” sung by Metzger.
Joe Russo’s Almost Dead hinted at “The Eleven” next but instead swerved into their first take on “Hot ‘Lanta.” Tom Hamilton and Marco Benevento each took furious solos ahead of a launch into “The Eleven” hinted at earlier. Metzger uncorked one intense riff after another as “The Eleven” started. The band followed the Live Era classic with their premiere rendition of “In The Midnight Hour.” Metzger helmed JRAD’s version of the song penned by Wilson Pickett. The five-piece punctuated the frame with a rollicking “Cumberland Blues.” Russo thanked fans for their patience in dealing with the rescheduling and introduced his bandmates at the end of the set.
The quintet kicked off last night’s second set with a lengthy exploration of the Motown classic “I Second That Emotion.” The Smokey Robinson-popularized tune gave way to “Help On The Way,” which bled into “Slipknot!” Instead of coupling the pairing with “Franklin’s Tower,” JRAD slammed from “Slipknot!” into a rousing “I Need A Miracle.” The seamless start to the set continued with a gorgeous “He’s Gone,” wild “Estimated Prophet” and a spacey interlude that reached near silence before the band revved into “The Wheel.”
Sunday’s “The Wheel” saw Joe Russo’s Almost Dead vary tempos throughout and included teases of Harry Nilsson’s “Coconut.” Joe Russo shared his appreciation to the crowd “for being quiet and listening” following “The Wheel” and once again pointed out Dreiwitz, Metzger, Benevento and Hamilton. He also noted the band would skip the traditional encore break and launched into “Big Railroad Blues” as the final song of the weekend.
