John Mayer cleared customs on his way up to Toronto, Canada’s Scotiabank Arena on Monday, where he continued his solo acoustic tour with a number of tour debuts, including “Hotel Bathroom”, a song requested by a fan the old-fashioned way, by holding up a sign.

After joining support act JP Saxe for a song during his opening set, Mayer kicked off the show with a couple familiar favorites before introducing the first tour debut of the night, “Shot in the Dark”, off 2020’s Sob Rock, which featured snippets of Bruce Springsteen‘s “Dancing in the Dark” and Aerosmith‘s “What It Takes”—both compatible with Sob Rock‘s ’80s-inspired aesthetic. Next came another tour debut, “Emoji of a Wave”, which was printed on the setlist but never played in Boston a week prior.

After a few more familiar favorites including “Why Georgia”, “Neon”, and “Waitin’ on the Day”, plus clips from a 2002 pre-fame interview, Mayer took a cue from the crowd, literally, and played “Hotel Bathroom” per a request written on a sign. He finished the first portion of the show with “In Your Atmosphere”, “Driftin’”, and “Your Body Is a Wonderland” before moving from acoustic guitar to piano.

Keeping with the format of previous nights, Mayer played just a few songs on piano, including “New Light”, “You’re Gonna Live Forever in Me”, and “Changing”, during which he recorded and looped the piano and played a guitar solo.

After more interview clips, Mayer returned to acoustic guitar for a few song, finishing with “Walt Grace’s Submarine Test, January 1967” before moving on to the final portion of the set on double-neck acoustic guitar. With a total of 18 strings at his disposal, Mayer offered one last tour debut, “A Face to Call Home”, off of Born and Raised, followed by “If I Ever Get Around to Living” and “Edge of Desire”. He then returned to cap off the night with a two song encore comprised of the title track from Born and Raised and a cover of Tom Petty‘s “Free Fallin’”, which appeared mid-set on the opening night of the tour, and it must have been a good one, because Mayer has closed with it every night since.
