Lotus has shared an update on the search for the band’s percussionist, Chuck Morris, and his son, Charley Morris, who have been missing since Thursday, March 16th following a kayaking excursion on Beaver Lake in Arkansas.
“We were all hoping for a miracle, but at this point, the search for Chuck and Charley has moved to a recovery,” the band said in a social media post today, Tuesday, March 21st. “With help from the K9 team, there is a probable location on the lake, but logistical challenges including temperature, weather, and depth have prevented a recovery thus far.”
The update continued, “It is unknown how long these efforts may take. While we are deeply grieving, we plan to celebrate Chuck and Charley’s lives, our memories with them, and what they meant to so many people. Thank you to all who have reached out with fond words, stories, emotional and financial support. Help support the family’s immediate financial needs by donating [here].”
In a previous post on Monday, March 20th, Chuck’s wife, Jenny Thompson, offered a brief message to the Lotus fanbase. “Please know how grateful our family is for all the outpouring of support. Chuck absolutely loves the Lotus family and fans and was so inspired after coming home from this last tour. You make his life so meaningful and we are thankful for that. Please continue to hold my lovely husband and son in your hearts and prayers.”
Per a Monday morning report by the Fort Smith Times Record, a search of the area has been underway on the water and on land. Flyers are posted in the area, hikers in the area have been notified to be on the lookout, and authorities have asked anyone who has information pertinent to the search to make contact by calling 911 or the local sheriff’s office at 479-271-1008.
In an open letter to Chuck Morris posted over the weekend, founding Lotus guitarist Mike Rempel, who left Lotus in 2021 to pursue a career in wellness and mindfulness education, pondered what Chuck might have said in this heart-wrenching situation: “I imagine that you would wish us to be comforted rather than contorted in pain. I imagine that you would wish something like, ‘Just be there for each other. Let this moment be a heart-centered moment. May this moment remind you of the preciousness of life. May your fears and your tears bring you more deeply into your humanity and clarify your vision such that you clearly see the beauty that is your existence.’ That’s how I imagine your wish for us – all of us that love you.”
