See Bluegrass Supergroup Mighty Poplar Perform Tony Rice’s ‘Tipper’ In 2022

Less Than Face Productions recently shared pro-shot video of Mighty Poplar covering Tony Rice at the 2022 Green Mountain Bluegrass & Roots Festival in Manchester, Vermont. The bluegrass supergroup featuring members of Leftover Salmon, Billy Strings, Punch Brothers and Watchhouse tackled Tony’s “Tipper.”

The instrumental “Tipper” appears on the late great Tony Rice’s 1986 album Me & My Guitar. As Mighty Poplar guitarist Chris Eldridge (Punch Brothers) pointed out at Green Mountain, Tony was inspired to write “Tipper” by his dog of the same name.

Mighty Poplar — who recently announced their debut album — is Eldridge and his Punch Brothers bandmate Noam Pikelny on banjo, Watchhouse’s Andrew Marlin on mandolin, Billy Strings’ Alex Hargreaves on fiddle and Leftover Salmon’s Greg Garrison on bass.
