Guitarist John Mayer assembled the John Mayer Trio for one night only to headline Thursday’s Love Rocks NYC 2023 benefit concert at The Beacon Theatre in New York City. Mayer, bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan last performed together in 2017 as part of the guitarist’s The Search For Everything World Tour.

The John Mayer Trio was formed in 2005 and their lone tour that fall included slots supporting The Rolling Stones, a band Jordan would join last year following the death of Charlie Watts. A pair of shows held at Chicago’s House Of Blues on September 21 and 22, 2005 were chronicled on Try!, a live album released on November 22, 2005. Only a handful of John Mayer Trio performances have been held since 2005. The three-piece took part in the 2016 “Great Night In Harlem” benefit concert at The Apollo and devoted portions of Search For Everything World Tour shows to the trio format.

Love Rocks NYC, an annual benefit for God’s Love We Deliver, was hosted by Bill Murray. The comedian/actor gave a hilarious introduction of the three musicians before they hit the stage with “Who Did You Think I Was.” Mayer wrote the song for release as the trio’s debut single.

“Who Did You Think I Was” incorporated a jam on Jimi Hendrix’s “Power Of Soul.” Jordan then laid down the sturdy beat that kicks off “Vultures,” a blues-rock song credited to the three members of the band. John Mayer sang falsetto for the bulk of the tune. “Vultures” was the only song played last night that Mayer performed during his 2022 tour.

The John Mayer Trio’s first set in six years concluded with a cover of the Jimi Hendrix classic “Wait Until Tomorrow.” The tune off the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s 1967 album Axis: Bold As Love was a staple of the three-piece’s 2005 sets and Try! included a take on “Wait Until Tomorrow.” Mayer unleashed torrents of blues-heavy riffage throughout the three-song performance. Both John Mayer and Pino Palladino went on to join many Love Rocks NYC 2023 musicians in contributing to the evening’s “People Get Ready” finale.
