The music of Steely Dan will once again fill the air in New Orleans during Jazz Fest when a 12-piece ensemble featuring members of Cool Cool Cool, The Nth Power, The Motet, and Snarky Puppy goes back (Jack) to The Howlin’ Wolf on Thursday, May 4th (technically early a.m. May 5th) for another edition of the fan-favorite late-night tribute concert. Led by the talented Joey Porter, the funky keyboardist for The Motet, the band will feature the seven core members of Cool Cool Cool including Craig Brodhead (guitar, keys), Michelangelo Carubba (drums), Shira Elias (vocals), and Sammi Garett (vocals) as well as trumpeter Chris Brouwers and saxophonists Josh Schwartz and Greg Sanderson, otherwise known as The Horn Section. They will be joined by a crew of familiar collaborators including The Nth Power‘s Nick Cassarino (guitar, vocals) and Nate Edgar (bass), Snarky Puppy percussionist Nate Werth, and soulful singer Lyle Divinsky.
Following the debut of this loaded tribute to the music of Steely Dan at the 2018 edition of Brooklyn Comes Alive, various iterations of the ensemble came together for sold-out, late-night blowouts in New Orleans during Jazz Fest 2019 and Jazz Fest 2022. The Steely Dan Tribute on Thursday, May 4th at The Howlin’ Wolf is the latest announcement as part of Live For Live Music’s annual Fest by Nite series during New Orleans Jazz Fest. Previously announced shows include The Soul Rebels with special guest GZA (Wu-Tang Clan) at Toulouse Theatre (Friday, 4/28, 9:00 p.m.); The Nth Power‘s Tribute to The Gap Band featuring members of Dumpstaphunk and more at Toulouse Theatre (Friday, 4/28, 1:45 a.m.), TAUK‘s Parliament-Funkadelic vs. Sly and the Family Stone celebration featuring Kanika Moore, Antwaun Stanley, and The Horn Section at Toulouse Theatre (Saturday, 4/29); The Daze Between Band at Tipitina’s (Wednesday, 5/3 – SOLD OUT); Poppa Funk & The Night Tripper: A Tribute to Art Neville & Dr. John at The Civic Theatre (Friday, 5/5, 9:00 p.m.); two nights of The Disco Biscuits at Mahalia Jackson Theater (Friday, May 5th and Saturday, May 6th); and Worship My Organ at The Howlin’ Wolf featuring John Medeski, Adam Deitch, Wil Blades, and Skerik (Saturday, May 6th).
Music fans in New Orleans during Jazz Fest can also take part in the fun at Daze Between New Orleans, a two-day music festival at Faubourg Brewery on Tuesday, May 2nd and Wednesday, May 3rd featuring two nights of Goose in addition to performances by Tank and the Bangas, Lawrence, Neal Francis, David Shaw, George Porter Jr. & Runnin’ Pardners, Eggy, Melt, Honey Island Swamp Band, J & The Causeways, and The Quickening.
