The National Releases Haunting ‘Eucalyptus’ Single

69

The National unveiled “Eucalyptus,” the third single from their forthcoming album, First Two Pages Of Frankenstein. The 11-song LP arrives on April 28 via 4AD.

First Two Pages Of Frankenstein marks The National’s ninth studio album and includes guest appearances by Taylor Swift, Phoebe Bridgers and Sufjan Stevens. The band recorded the self-produced follow-up to 2019’s I Am Easy To Find at Long Pond Studios in Upstate New York. Lead single “Tropic Morning News” came out in January, while “New Order T-Shirt” followed last month.

Bryce Dessner began work on “Eucalyptus” and sent the tune to frontman Matt Berninger. While Dessner forgot about the exchange, Berninger wrote lyrics in time for The National’s soundcheck before a show at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. “We rehearsed it twice without ever having had a demo and played it to the audience that night, and what you hear on the album was partially recorded during that performance,” Berninger explained. “It’s got this raw, immediate feeling, and it made sense to leave the rough edges instead of trying to perfect them.”
