Watch Dark Star Orchestra Wrap Marathon Show In Red Bank With Rollicking ‘The Shape I’m In’ Cover

Dark Star Orchestra kicked off the East Coast leg of their 2023 winter tour at the Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank, New Jersey on Thursday. The Grateful Dead tribute act recreated the band’s October 15, 1977 show from the Moody Coliseum in Dallas and threw in The Band’s “The Shape I’m In” to cap the concert.

The sold-out show got going with the classic opener “Bertha.” The first set saw additional Dead classics like “They Love Each Other,” “Ramble On Rose” and “Looks Like Rain.” Covers included The Rascals’ “Good Lovin,’” Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried,” Johnny Cash’s “Big River” and the traditional “Peggy-O.” DSO wrapped the set with “Let It Grow.”

The second set kicked off with another traditional adaptation, “Samson And Delilah.” The rarity “Sunrise,” played exclusively in 1977 and ‘78, came next. The Terrapin Station track prefaced the eponymous epic from the band’s landmark 1977 LP, which kicked off a continuous set-closing sequence of “St. Stephen,” “Not Fade Away,” “Stella Blue” and “Sugar Magnolia.” The encore consisted of “Truckin’” and “One More Saturday Night.”

DSO launched the bonus segment with a song from Scottish-born singer-songwriter Frankie Miller, “I’ll Take A Melody.” The Dead’s “Mr. Charlie” followed before the group concluded the concert with a rollicking “The Shape I’m In.” Bassist Skip Vangelas lead the band — including vocalist Lisa Mackey — through the tune, which saw a sit-in from drummer Jimmy Monia, who plays with Skip and DSO guitarist Rob Eaton in the group Boarder Legion. Keyboardist Rob Barraco also had some smoking piano stylings in store for The Band classic.
