Fleet Foxes held a “Spring Recital” concert last night at Los Angeles’ Belasco Theatre. The night started with Joanna Newsom taking the stage as the surprise opener for her first live performance since 2020 and included Fleet Foxes bringing out frontman Robin Pecknold‘s father to play bass on a mesmerizing cover of Joni Mitchell’s “Hejira.”
Harpist/pianist/vocalist Joanna Newsom kicked off the action with a seven-song set. Newsom began the solo performance with “Go Long” off her 2010 album Have One On Me and ended by looking to 2006’s Ys for “Sawdust and Diamonds.” In between came five brand new song entitled “Bombs Are Whistling,” “Marie At The Mill,” “Little Hand,” “The Air Again” and “No Wonder” as per Setlist.FM.
Fleet Foxes delivered a 20-song set and four-tune encore on Wednesday in Los Angeles. Pecknold and company opened with “Sun Giant,” the title track from their 2008 EP, which was last played on October 25, 2009. The band went heavy on material from their most recent album, 2020’s Shore, with eight cuts from the album making the setlist. Included were the live debut of “Cradling Mother, Cradling Woman” and the first full band version of “Maestranza.”
Robin Pecknold welcomed his dad, Greg Pecknold, towards the end of the set. “My dad is an incredible musician … he built this built bass guitar you’re looking it,” Robin said in regards to Greg’s five-string fretless bass. “We’re gonna play the song ‘Hejira’ by Joni Mitchell and my dad will be playing Jaco Pastorious,” Robin added in regards to the legendary late bassist who is featured on the title track to Mitchell’s 1976 studio album.

Joanna Newsom returned to accompany Fleet Foxes on the final two songs of the evening. Newsom augmented the group on Helplessness Blues standout “Blue Spotted Tail” and her own “Good Intentions Paving Company.” Fleet Foxes launch a summer tour on June 13 in Cleveland.
