My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James was the first featured performer to take the stage at last night’s Love Rocks NYC benefit concert. James led the house band on his own solo cut “State Of The Art (A.E.I.O.U.)” and a cover of Elton John’s “Rocket Man” to get the four-hour show underway on Thursday at The Beacon Theatre in New York City.

While serving as the opener isn’t typically a prime slot, Love Rocks NYC organizers use the spot to hype up the capacity crowd before a speech from concert beneficiary God’s Love We Deliver’s CEO and a video profiling the organization that makes and brings food to New Yorkers in need. Previous Love Rocks NYC shows started with performances by Ben Harper, Grace Potter (twice), Cyndi Lauper, Trombone Shorty and Bruce Willis.

Jim James was backed by the Love Rocks NYC House Band for both songs. Musical director bassist Will Lee (Letterman) was joined in the extremely talented group by guitarist Eric Krasno (Soulive, Lettuce), multi-instrumetalist Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm), keyboardists Paul Shaffer (Letterman) and Michael Bearden (Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson), drummers Shawn Pelton (Saturday Night Live) and Steve Gadd (Paul Simon, Steely Dan) as well as percussionist Pedrito Martinez (Yerba Buena).

“State Of The Art (A.E.I.O.U.)” originally appeared on Jim James’ first proper solo album, 2013’s Regions Of Light And Sound Of God. The song has been played by James more than any other at solo shows. My Morning Jacket began performing “State Of The Art” in 2015 with five versions coming as part of the group’s 2022 tour. Jim’s voice featured plenty of reverb at the Beacon as he made his way through the cut along with the powerhouse Love Rocks band.

“Rocket Man (I Think It’s Going To Be A Long, Long Time)” was penned by Elton John and lyricist Bernie Taupin. The lead single from 1972’s Honky Château peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. MMJ covered “Rocket Man” twice in the early 2000s and brought it back for two performances in 2010. The song has been played sparingly by the group since with latest version coming at Colorado’s famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre on August 27, 2022.

The Love Rocks NYC House Band was accompanied by the We Deliver Singers and God’s Love Horns for the Jim James-helmed “Rocket Man” last night. Larry Campbell shined on pedal steel guitar while renowned drummers Gadd and Pelton gently guided the cover.
