It’s not hyperbolic to state the level of talent assembled for last night’s seventh annual Love Rocks NYC benefit concert at The Beacon Theatre was right up there with some of the best one-night-only shows in rock history. Multiple Rock & Roll Hall of Famers participated as did a number of those who are likely to make it into the institution over the next few decades. The evening’s finale saw many of the evening’s performers load the stage for a tribute to Jeff Beck who died in January at the age of 78.
The marvelous performances served up by the assemblage of musical icons at the four-hour concert buries the lede of the night and its lasting impact. Over $3.5 million was raised for God’s Love We Deliver, an organization that cooks and home-delivers nutritious, medically tailored meals to New Yorkers too ill to shop or cook for themselves. All of God’s Love We Deliver’s services are free and unbelievably there is no wait list for those in need. The concert executive produced by Greg Williamson, John Varvatos and Nicole Rechter provides a whopping 10 percent of God’s Love We Deliver’s annual operating budget. What a win-win Love Rocks NYC is.
Williamson and his fellow executive producers came out after the first John Mayer Trio performance since 2017 to announce the final song of the night would be dedicated to Jeff Beck. The stage was then loaded with illustrious artists for a collaborative version of “People Get Ready.” Penned by Curtis Mayfield and originally recorded by The Impressions, Beck released his take on “People Get Ready” featuring Rod Stewart on vocals in 1985 on his Flash album. The song became a staple of Jeff Beck’s concerts.
Speaking of unbelievably talented musicians, the Love Rocks NYC House Band backed the evening’s performers on all songs but the John Mayer Trio set including the “People Get Ready” closer. Directed by bassist Will Lee, the ensemble featured guitarists Eric Krasno and Larry Campbell, keyboardists Paul Shaffer and Michael Bearden, drummers Shawn Pelton and Steve Gadd and percussionist Pedrito Martinez. Additionally, the God’s Love Horns and We Deliver Singers each consisted of six members.
Warren Haynes helmed the start of “People Get Ready.” Allison Russell, Sheryl Crow, Jim James, James Taylor, Pat Benatar, Rufus Wainwright and St. Vincent then sang a few lines each. Fretboard fireworks a plenty followed from Haynes, New York Yankee great Bernie Williams, Jimmy Vivino, Neil Geraldo, Jim James, St. Vincent, John Mayer and Gary Clark Jr.. The latter handled lead vocals for the final verses and choruses.
