Watch Margo Price’s Fierce Performance Of Loretta Lynn’s ‘The Pill’

Loretta Lynn recorded “The Pill” in 1972, but the song about a married woman’s access to birth control was held back until 1975 when it appeared on the country music legend’s album, Back To Country. Banned by radio stations across the country upon its release, “The Pill,” was not only a defacto feminist anthem, but it was also one of Lynn’s most successful and well-known recordings.

Lynn, who died at age 90 on October 4, 2022, is credited with co-writing “The Pill” with Lorene Allen, T. D. Bayless and Don McHan. The banning of the song by radio stations effectively backfired as the resulting uproar only helped propel the popularity of Lynn’s recording to cross-over success.

Prior to “The Pill,” Lynn’s song “One’s On The Way,” which was written by Shel Silverstein, also addressed the matter of women’s reproductive rights and body autonomy. Fellow singer-songwriter Margo Price accompanied Lynn on a re-recording of “One’s On The Way” for what became Lynn’s final album, 2021’s Still Woman Enough. The collaborative track was included in a playlist Price shared today along with a poem written for International Women’s Day entitled “What It Means To Be (A Woman In 2023).”

Price was also part of the “Coal Miner’s Daughter: A Celebration of the Life & Music of Loretta Lynn” concert held on October 30, 2022. The all-star event was held at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry House and featured Tanya Tucker, Wynonna Judd, The Highwomen’s Brandie Carlile, Amanda Shires, Natalie Hemby and Brittany Spencer, and more including Lynn’s granddaughter Emmy Russell.
