moe. added another new cover song to their live repertoire during the encore of their show on Saturday in St. Petersburg, Florida. The band premiered their take on Deep Purple’s classic rock favorite “Space Truckin’” to close out their concert at Jannus Live.
“Space Truckin’” joined another recently debuted cover song, Steely Dan’s “Do It Again,” which made its debut on March 10 and was played for a second time as part of Saturday’s second set. The lone cover played in the first set, the Grateful Dead’s “West L.A. Fadeaway,” entered the band’s repertoire as part of a livestream performance in 2020.
Prepared by bassist Rob Derhak, Saturday’s setlist began with a first set opening “32 Things.” The rest of the first half was filled in with “Jazz Cigarette,” “Seat Of My Pants,” “Sensory Deprivation Bank,” the aforementioned “West L.A. Fadeway” and regularly coupled “Tubing The River Styx” and “The Pit.”
Derhak selected “Skitchin’ Buffalo” to start the second set on Saturday night. Then came “So Long” and the second attempt at Steely Dan’s “Do It Again.” A trio of classic moe. originals capped the second half which unfolded with “Captain America,” “ATL” and “Timmy Tucker.”
Released as the final song on Deep Purple’s acclaimed 1972 studio album Machine Head, “Space Truckin’” was sung by moe. percussionist Jim Loughlin. Watch footage from Saturday’s encore, beginning with guitarist Al Schnier‘s “Al.nouncments” below:
