The penultimate show of Goose’s spring tour took place last night as the second of two concerts at The Warfield Theatre in San Francisco. While lighter on improv compared to the first night, the band delivered two hot sets and a rare cover-less setlist.

Excitement abounded pre-show as Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh was spotted in attendance – attending his first Goose show after guitarist Rick Mitarotonda spent multiple runs as a “Friend” with the legendary musician.

The night opened up with the appropriate “California Magic,” the quintet was tight from the get-go, offering up a strong climax before diving headfirst into “Turbulence & The Night Rays” – this went a similar route with an absolutely massive and screaming Mitarotonda solo as he showed off his new custom guitar and its more vicious tone.

“Elizabeth” opened up quickly into its usual choogle jam, guitarist/keyboardist Peter Anspach at the forefront on funky clavinet as Mitarotonda chopped up the rhythm guitar. The rhythm section took the helm from there as bassist Trevor Weekz introduced an inspired peak-forming chord progression. As the fire died away, Goose was not content to let the jam go just yet and crafted a gorgeous major-key space once again first led by Weekz.

A patient and emotional build reached a soaring space where Mitarotonda was free to reach for the skies with some truly beautiful lead lines – the aforementioned new guitar sounding perfect and adding some extra sustain to his soloing. A quick “Madhuvan”-esque build returned to the song proper to close the first set highlight.

Mitarotonda’s ballad “Not Alone” acted as a nice breather before “Everything Must Go” offered up another healthy serving of fretboard fireworks from the lead guitarist. While the song is still growing into its role as a jam vehicle, its improvisation continues to expand with each version and will no doubt come to fruition soon.

The first frame closed with “Seekers on the Ridge,” Mitarotonda once again stepping to the front with screaming guitar leads.

The band returned for the second set and ripped into the longest “Thatch” to date. The jam immediately took off into an aggressive funk groove thanks to the tight work from all three members of the rhythm section. The capacity Warfield crowd ate up every note as Goose fully explored the open space of the jam. The numerous builds and peaks smashed right into the ending of “Thatch” as the band executed the twists and turns of the composition with ease.

Anspach’s dance tune “Feel It Now” kept the crowd dancing with a solid 10-minute dose of groove that showcased percussionist Jeff Arevalo’s layering work. “Silver Rising” offered a breather and yet another standout guitar solo ahead of a set-closing “Arrow.”

While not venturing too far from the song proper, “Arrow” is always sure to deliver solid improvisation – and last night was no different. Drummer Ben Atkind laid down a hard-charging groove, leading the quintet into a section that offered lots of space for the other band members to add their own touches. Anspach led the way with strong Vintage Vibe work around Mitarotonda’s staccato leads. This piece of improvisation reached a space that Goose has really been bringing more and more of into their shows lately – groupthink. Rather than one member leading the way through the jam, each fit their own sound and part in as a piece of the overall musical puzzle.

An explosion into the conclusion of “Arrow” closed out the relatively short second set as many in the venue looked at their watches and began speculating what the large chunk of time left before curfew might be used for.

Goose opted to treat the fans to a massive “Madhuvan” encore, a rare occasion where the highlight of the show comes as the final song. With switches from dark to light and back again, this behemoth began with some serious evil dissonance almost like the intro to “Dr. Darkness.” Anspach utilized both warbled keyboard textures and haunting guitar to layer into the motif before Mitarotonda pulled a funky groove out of the haze. From there, Goose modulated smoothly into a major key, soaring one last time in a progression reminiscent of Phish’s “Harry Hood.”

As the glorious peak seemed to be hitting its final runs, a quick glance from Mitarotonda signaled a pivot smoothly back into “Madhuvan” proper right at the apex. Dissonant builds continued to elevate tension and energy as Weekz laid down incredible builds.

With the audience locked in for a shining moment at the peak, arms raised in triumph at the glory of The Warfield “Madhuvan” as it closed out the show.

Goose’s Spring Tour 2023 closes tonight in San Diego. Livestreams are available for free to nugs.net subscribers.
