Colter Wall returned from the prairies of southern Saskatchewan with a new batch of Little Songs. Out on July 14th via Wall’s longtime label La Honda Records and its new partner RCA Records, Wall previewed his first studio album since 2020 with a cover of Hoyt Axton‘s “Evangelina”.
Originally released by Axton in 1976, “Evangelina” hears Wall taking a trip down to the deserts of old Mexico, if only in his mind. Searching for the dreamy Evangalina, the thirsty ballad muses of half-laid plans that will never come to pass as any hope of reunion disappears like a desert mirage.
Little Songs uses Wall’s plain-spoken lyricism to etch a realistic image of the rural work life in the Canadian West. The album serves as a follow-up to 2020’s Western Swing & Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs, with the eight original tunes continuing to break open the calloused exterior of the everyday rancher with a golden baritone. The album also features two covers including Axton’s “Evangelina” and Ian Tyson‘s “The Coyote & The Cowboy”.
“These songs were written over the last three years. I penned most of them from home and I think the songs reflect that,” Wall said simply of the new album.
