Duane Betts will release his long-awaited debut solo album Wild & Precious Life on July 14th via Royal Potato Family. The son of Allman Brothers Band co-founder Dickey Betts offered the first preview of the album, which features guest appearances from Derek Trucks, Marcus King, and Nicki Bluhm, with the lead single, “Waiting On A Song”.
The Sarasota, FL native lets the sunshine seep into the lead single as he patiently waits—fishing rod in hand—for inspiration to strike. It’s no wonder many of the songs were written while home in Florida, and oftentimes in the presence of his Rock & Roll Hall of Famer dad, now 80.
The Sunshine State connections got even deeper as Betts was invited to record the album at Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi‘s Swamp Raga Studio in Jacksonville. At a birthday party in the Florida Keys, Betts found himself talking to the first couple of modern blues about his idea for creating an album highlighting a vintage sound that’s distinctly Floridian. Susan jumped at the idea, and before long Betts and his backing band consisting of guitarist Johnny Stachela, bassist Berry Duane Oakley, keyboardist John Ginty, and drummer Tyler Greenwell were down at Swamp Raga. The troupe recorded the album live to analog tape in a couple of weeks.
“I wanted that old Florida sound, that mix of folk, rock, blues, and country,” Betts told Garden & Gun. “I’d like to think we got it.”
