Emily King shared a new single, “False Start,” featuring labelmate Nick Hakim. The song will appear on the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter’s forthcoming album, Special Occasion, set for release on May 5 via ATO Records.
Produced by Jeremy Most, Special Occasion contains 11 tracks which are “a real-time exploration of the endless dimensions of heartbreak. Using music as a means of meditation and healing, King works through the most overwhelming emotions with ineffable grace and resilience,” as per a press release.
Previously released Special Occasion singles include “This Year” and “Medal.” King now follows with “False Start.”
“I had experienced the feeling of going against my instincts, trying to quiet a voice inside me,” Emily said of the new single. “I wrote the song one day in the studio in LA. I sat in front of the microphone and started with a line I’d had for so long, and the rest of the song all came out. It was very cathartic.”
