Leftover Salmon released “Blue Railroad Train,” the second single from their forthcoming covers album, Grass Roots. The veteran jamgrass act is joined for “Blue Railroad Train” by Billy Strings on guitar and vocals.

Grass Roots arrives via Compass Records on May 19. Leftover Salmon — guitarist Vince Herman, mandolinist Drew Emmitt, bassist Greg Garrison, banjoist Andy Thorn, drummer Alwyn Robinson and multi-instrumentalist Jay Starling — recorded the 10-track follow-up to 2021’s Brand New Good Old Days at Compass Sound Studio in Nashville last May.

Strings also contributed guitar to a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Nashville Skyline Rag” featured on Grass Roots. Additionally, Oliver Wood appears on LoS’ version of the Link Wray classic “Fire And Brimstone,” while Darol Anger’s fiddle can be heard on “The New Lee Highway Blues” (David Bromberg) and “Country Blues” (Dock Boggs). Other artists covered by Leftover Salmon for Grass Roots include the Grateful Dead, Seldom Scene and Merle Haggard. The Colorado-based band previously shared their take on “Simple Twist Of Fate” from the album.

“Blue Railroad Train” was written by Alton and Rabon Delmore, aka The Delmore Brothers. “The track is a tip of the hat to old Nashville, and particularly to Doc Watson and Tony Rice, who helped to define the path for contemporary bluegrass,” explained Vince Herman as per a press release in pointing out two other artists that covered the song.
