The California Honeydrops released a cover of “Like A Ship.” Pastor T.L. Barrett and The Youth For Christ Choir first recorded and released the gospel classic in 1971.

A South Side Chicago preacher and musician, Barrett released the album Like A Ship…(Without A Sail) with the help of Chess/Cadet Records’ Gene Barge, Phil Upchurch and Richard Evans as well as the after-school Youth For Christ Choir. While the album didn’t gain much attention at the time of release, it has since become a critically acclaimed and highly influential work.

“One of the most important albums ever made,” My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James said about Like A Ship…(Without A Sail). “Ranks right up there with What’s Going On, Dark Side Of The Moon, and Pet Sounds as a flawlessly executed vision brought to life in perfect harmony. Enriches the soul and expands the mind.”

Artists including Leon Bridges and Richard Ashcroft have covered “Like A Ship,” with The California Honeydrops the latest to nod to the gospel number with their “Live From Stange Manor” version. Listen to The Honeydrops on “Like A Ship” below:
