Lucinda Williams released a new single entitled “Stolen Moments,” which was written in response to Tom Petty’s death in 2017. The song appears on Williams’ forthcoming studio album, Stories From A Rock n Roll Heart.
Williams co-produced Stories From A Rock n Roll Heart with her husband Tom Overby and Ray Kennedy, who also engineered. The 10-track album, set for release on June 30, is the follow-up to Williams’ 2020 LP, Good Souls Better Angels.
After recovering from a stroke in November 2020 that left her unable to play guitar, Williams began recording the new album the following November, and as her strength improved, sessions continued into 2022. Sessions included Williams’ longtime touring guitarist Stuart Mathis, keyboardist Reese Wynans, bassist Steve Mackey (Dolly Parton), pedal steel guitarist Doug Pettibone and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers drummer Steve Ferrone.
Guests on the record include Bruce Springsteen, Patti Scialfa, Jesse Malin, Margo Price, Jeremy Ivey, Angel Olsen, Buddy Miller, Siobhan Maher Kennedy, Sophie Gault and the Replacements’ Tommy Stinson. Williams co-wrote three songs on Stories with Malin, while her longtime road manager Travis Stephens co-wrote six songs on the pending album. Overby also earned co-writing credits, including “Stolen Moments.”
In October 2020, just before the stroke, Williams recorded a series of livestreams that supported independent music venues during the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the “Lu’s Jukebox” livestreams was a tribute to Tom Petty, later released as Runnin’ Down a Dream: A Tribute to Tom Petty. Comprised of Petty covers recorded with her band at Ray Kennedy’s Room & Board Studio in Nashville, the live performance ended with “Stolen Moments.”
Williams was the opening act for the final Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers concerts in September 2017. Following Petty’s death, Williams wrote “Stolen Moments,” about which she stated:
“Tom was a down-to-earth, sweet, loving person, and I miss his music but I miss him more. I wrote this song after he passed away. I was just heartbroken, and I’m still reeling.”
