Phish bassist Mike Gordon shared a new single for his song “Mull.” The recording comes from Gordon’s upcoming solo album, Flying Games, which will be released through ATO Records/Megaplum on May 12.
“Mull” was first performed live by Phish at a show in Nashville on August 3, 2021, and has appeared in a total of seven of the band’s setlists, most recently in February in Mexico.
“’Mull’ is a tribute to how indecisive I used to be, though maybe I still am, or maybe I’m not so much anymore?” Gordon said. “This song is for anyone who likes to bask in states of limbo. I’ve gotten more decisive as I’ve gotten older, but this song is partly about being wish-washy in situations where you’re not sure how to deal with someone who’s frustrating you. It’s also got that moment of elation when you realize you actually don’t need that person, and you can go ahead and move on with your life.”
Gordon produced the 13-track Flying Games, which was recorded by longtime collaborator Jared Slomoff and mixed by engineer Shawn Everett. Guitarist Scott Murawski, who performs in Gordon’s solo band, had pressed Gordon to write a “harder-hitting rock song,” which led the bassist to record a “Mull” demo that was embellished with an industrial rhythm part played by wrenches banged on tractors in his garage.
Everett took Gordon’s initial recording and overhauled the mix by relying on a deep analysis of the structure of Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground.”
“‘Higher Ground’ has nothing to do with ‘Mull,’ but Shawn used it as a reference for organizing the tracks or cueing certain instruments,” Gordon said. “He’s a real visionary and has so many ways of pulling himself out of his comfort zone, which all ties into my overall goal of creating a very unique layering of sounds.”
Gordon previously shared the Flying Games single “Tilting” and will soon embark on a solo tour in support of his sixth solo album. Listen to the album version of “Mull” below:
