New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is in full swing and when the sun goes down in New Orleans, the stars come out. After turning in a set at Jazz Fest set with Alison Krauss, Robert Plant rambled his way to Preservation Hall for a guest-filled Midnight Preserve show.

The Midnight Preserves is a special Jazz Fest slate of programming at the iconic Preservation Hall in New Orleans’ French Quarter. For top dollar, guests secure a space in the intimate, 100-person club with no knowledge of the performers beforehand. With Jazz Fest going on across town and bringing in headliners from around the globe plus New Orleans’ stable of local legends, however, the limited engagement didn’t fall short.

The first Midnight Preserve pulled in the Led Zeppelin frontman in addition to the “Soul Queen of New Orleans” Irma Thomas. During his time onstage, Plant performed “Rich Girl”—which was written by the grandparent of a member of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and appears on Plant and Krauss’ 2007 album Raising Sand—as well as the Led Zeppelin classic “Black Dog”.

Dave Matthews Band saxophonist Jeff Coffin also stopped by the 60-year-old club, as well as singer-songwriter Allison Russell. These acts joined the long-established Preservation Hall Jazz Band for a performance that captured the intimate spontaneity that defines New Orleans during Jazz Fest.
