Arizona-based jam quartet Spafford went two completely different routes for the covers they fit into their concert on Saturday night in Birmingham, Alabama. The group unveiled a take on Demi Lovato‘s “Anyone” during the first set at Zydeco and kicked off the second set with their first version of Rusted Root‘s “Send Me On My Way” since 2019.

Spafford — guitarist Brian Moss, keyboardist Cory Schechtman, bassist Jordan Fairless and drummer Nick Tkachyk — opened with the breezy rarity “Smooth, Relax, Down,” played for just the seventh time in 12 years as per SpaffNerds’ stats. Next came the six-month-old original “Fake The Fate,” which the four-piece jammed into “Anyone.”

Demi Lovato originally released “Anyone” on the 2020 LP, Dancing With The Devil… The Art Of Starting Over. While Demi’s version of the song, which deals with her substance abuse struggles and battle with depression, features just her voice and piano, Spafford gave “Anyone” a groovy disco-infused feel. The tune birthed an electronica jam in which Schechtman starred on synth. The quartet punctuated Saturday’s first set with a pairing of staples “Backdoor Funk” and “The Postman” that spanned nearly 40 minutes. Both cuts were heavy on fretboard fireworks from Moss.

Spafford launched the second set in Birmingham with “Send Me On My Way,” which was last played on November 2, 2019 and hadn’t been performed outside Arizona since 2016. Rusted Root first put out the song on their 1992 debut album, Cruel Sun. However it was a more fleshed-out version found on 1994’s When I Woke that put the band on the map, was played on rock radio stations nationwide and featured in multiple movies and television shows. Moss fronted a euphoric “Send Me On My Way” jam which didn’t stray too far from the song’s structure.

Fan-favorite “Electric Taco Stand” followed the bust out. Spafford fit “Dis Go In 5?” within the adventurous “Electric Taco Stand” at Zydeco. The group then went “All In” for nearly 20 minutes to close the frame. For the encore, Spaff looked to their latest studio album, 2022’s Simple Mysteries, in linking “To The Nest” and the title track in the same way that wraps the LP.
