The Murlocs Descend Into Debauchery On “Undone And Unashamed” [Video]

The Murlocs have no qualms about their hedonism on the band’s newest single, “Undone And Unashamed”. The track from the King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard side project led by multi-instrumentalist Ambrose Kenny-Smith will appear on the band’s country-tinged album Calm Ya Farm, out May 19th via ATO Records.

In opposition to the previous single “Initiative“, “Undone And Unashamed” has more of the classic garage static tone The Murlocs are known for. Though the band has stated that Calm Ya Farm is more of a departure from that reliable motif and instead experiments with 1970s American psychedelic rock, the underground fuzz is an indelible part of The Murlocs’ musical DNA. The band is trying new things also, with the single containing Kenny-Smith’s first saxophone solo.

As the title may suggest, “Undone And Unashamed” confronts the growing willingness to simply throw up one’s hands and step wilfully into becoming a dumpster fire of a person. Kenny-Smith howls out the character archetypes from the “prima donna snorting up too much coke” to the “Jimmy Dean…rebel without a cause,” as the never-ending party begins to take on real-life consequences.

“Letting loose all the time comes at a cost,” Kenny-Smith said of the lyrics. “When you choose to not hold yourself accountable for your actions by going on countless benders will only make things worse. People don’t always forgive and forget.”

The song’s Jack Rule-directed music video goes hand-in-hand with talks of benders with the use of a spinning fun-house room that Ambrose struts around in to comedic effect.

“When I was a kid I thought Shaun Micallef’s rotating room skit was the funniest thing I’d ever seen and always thought it’d work well for a music video,” Rule said. “Then I saw an Ames distortion room in a museum and thought the same thing. Combining the two was a stupid idea. Getting a living room sized set to levitate, and rotate safely was diabolically hard. This was a weird, magic, memorable project.”

“Undone And Unashamed” Lyrics

Hey you wearing that baby Blue Jean jacket
Cussing at the public and the police, playing chicken with the traffic
Strutting down the sidewalk, hopscotch, footpath, with your wrist in a cast
Whiskey cigarette breath toothless sipping from his hip flask

Undone and unashamed
Yeah are we that easily
Undone and unashamed
Keep building your barricades

Scrotum under the microscope, the prima donna snorting too much coke
Slow going with them thoughts, you sure got your point across
Shambolic you rust and corrode, never been one to do as your told
A Jimmy Dean breaking all the laws, rebel without a cause

Undone and unashamed
are we that easily
Undone and unashamed
are we that care free
Undone and unashamed
To delete our history
Undone and unashamed
Keep building your barricades

Rip it off like a bandaid when you gonna come out of your cave
How can I paraphrase it? It’s overpassed, belated
Silence discomfiture, defeated, totally conquered
Put it on the backseat burner but don’t let it simmer too long

Undone and unashamed
Yeah are we that easily
Undone and unashamed
Yeah are we that care free
Undone and unashamed
Yeah to delete our history
Undone and unashamed
Keep building your barricades

Rip it off like a bandaid when you gonna come out of your cave
How can I paraphrase it? It’s overpassed, belated
Silence discomfiture, defeated, totally conquered
Put it on the backseat burner but don’t let it simmer too long
