‘Two For Tuesday’: Widespread Panic Pairs Songs By Themes In Austin

Two was the magic number for Widespread Panic on Tuesday as the band began the second of three two-night stands that make up their six-show residency at Austin’s ACL Live at The Moody Theater. Last night’s concert saw the veteran jam sextet present one two-song pairing after another, each with a specific theme.

The “Two For Tuesday” performance began with Talking Heads covers, as Widespread Panic followed the “Papa Legba” opener with “Heaven.” Next came “Dyin’ Man” and “One Arm Steve,” both of which are featured on the group’s 1999 studio album, ‘Til The Medicine Takes. Panic then offered “Tickle The Truth” and “Ribs & Whiskey,” two songs initially debuted by frontman John Bell at solo shows. The Georgia-birthed band went on to end the set by coupling material from close collaborators/friends as takes on the Vic Chesnutt-penned “Blight” and “Sleeping Man” gave way to Bloodkin originals “Trashy” and “Henry Parsons Died.”

Widespread Panic kicked off last night’s second set with “Airplane” and “Pleas,” two songs written by late founding guitarist Michael Houser. The latter bled into Funkadelic’s “Maggot Brain,” which was paired with a cover of the legendary funk band’s “Red Hot Mama” before the sextet pulled “Jamais Vu” and “Cease Fire” off what still stands as their latest studio album — 2015’s Street Dogs. Panic capped the set by linking Jerry Joseph originals “Chainsaw City” and “Climb To Safety.”

Uncannily, both sets spanned exactly 74 minutes. Widespread Panic dusted off “When You Coming Home” off their 2010 album Dirty Side Down on electrics for the first time since October 15, 2011 to get Tuesday’s encore underway. The band then said farewell with the beloved “Papa’s Home.” The former features the lyric “fire in the bed,” while the latter mentions “falling asleep by the fire.”
