Black Thought & El Michels Affair appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday. The Roots MC and soul-centric musician/producer/bandleader/flutist Leon Michels, along with special guest vocalist Kirby, offered the title track to their new album Glorious Game.
Both Black Thought (Tariq Trotter) and Leon Michels have connections to The Tonight Show. In 1987, Black Thought and Questlove co-founded The Roots, who are The Tonight Show house band. After collaborating with Trotter in the mid-2000s, members of Leon Michels’ group Menahan Street Band teamed with The Roots full-time, including trumpeter Dave Guy who joined Michels on the stand for yesterday’s Fallon performance.
With a shared history, Black Thought and El Michels Affair finally started collaborating in earnest in 2020 around the time of the pandemic shutdown. The result was Glorious Game, which arrived on April 14.
