The original Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros Trio lineup — guitarist Bob Weir, bassist Don Was and drummer Jay Lane — kicked off a five-show residency at Bay Area venue The Guild Theatre in Menlo Park, California last night. Acclaimed singer-songwriter JD Souther joined the three-piece for portions of their second set at The Guild, which began with Souther and Weir composing a new tune from scratch, as well as the encore.

Souther, best known for co-writing a number of Eagles hits, has been working with Weir and Josh Ritter on an opera. J.D. previously appeared at a 2022 Wolf Bros show near Nashville.

Bob Weir took the stage for the second set and explained the audience would witness and take part in his songwriting process. He then brought out J.D. Souther. “We’re going from 1-2-3 go, here. Give us a chance to get stuff going. But then if you like it let us know … if you don’t like it let us know,” Weir told the crowd. The two musicians then worked up a song tentively titled “I Know Nothing Blues.”

After coming up with a basic format, Lane and Was emerged to add a groove to the new song. “We haven’t figured out an ending to this yet,” Bobby noted as the tune faded out. “We’ll try to have something done with that by tomorrow night,” Weir added. The four musicians then played “She Knows What I’m Thinkin’,” a song debuted piecemeal last year. “She Knows What I’m Thinkin’” was co-written by Weir, Souther and Aaron Raitiere.

The trio and their guest continued Monday’s second set with two songs penned by J.D. Souther. Up first was the Eagles’ “New Kid In Town,” which was followed by the Souther-recorded “Do Nothing ‘Till You Hear From Me.” Both were Wolf Bros debuts. The ensemble then went sans Souther for Grateful Dead classics “Scarlet Begonias,” “New Speedway Boogie,” “The Other One” and “Black Peter.”

J.D. Souther returned to add to the set-closing “Not Fade Away.” The Detroit native also accompanied Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros Trio on the evening’s encore featuring the Eagles’ “Heartache Tonight” and the Jimmy Reed-penned/Elvis Presley-popularized “Baby What You Want Me To Do.” Souther wrote “Heartache Tonight” with Don Henley, Glenn Frey and Bob Seger.

Earlier in the night, the trio launched the run with a “The Music Never Stopped” that encapsulated “Easy Answers.” Weir, Lane and Was then played “Lay My Lily Down” from Bobby’s 2016 LP, Blue Mountain. “Lay My Lily Down” was last performed by Wolf Bros on February 28, 2020. Last night’s first set also featured covers of Bob Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece” and Johnny Cash’s “Big River” along with GD originals “Corrina” and “Deal.”

Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros Trio continue the five-show residency tonight. Livestreams are available via FANS.live.
